A lot of bedroom furniture and decorative items are beautiful in themselves but then do not fit when brought together. By bundling all your favorite colors, furniture and accessories on one large sheet, you can create a mood board and quickly get ideas on what fits and what doesn’t fit together to create the perfect and beautiful bedroom you would want.

A successful mood board consists of a collection of furniture, colors, fabrics, light fixtures and inspiration photos of bedroom furnishings. These can be found on the internet, in interior design magazines and brochures of interior design shops to give you more ideas.

Do you have some furniture that absolutely must come be in your dream bedroom? You can first take pictures of them so that they become part of your mood board and inspiration. Try to keep the number of photos to a minimum so that you still have more space for design freedom. By looking at the furniture from a distance, you often have a clear view of the overall picture from a different light and be better guided with ideas in creating a gorgeous bedroom.

Your mood board just might make all the difference between a nice bedroom and a gorgeous bedroom!

STEP 2: THE BEDROOM LAYOUT

Once you know which style you want in your bedroom, the furnishings can start. Take another sheet of paper and note down what pieces furniture should be in the bedroom and what size these should be. Then you can make a floor plan of the bedroom and start puzzling with the different pieces of furniture. Decide if your focal point in your bedroom is your sleep space – a large bed or bed frame-and-mattress set with bedside tables and draw in the positions of the other parts of your bedroom – like a corner for your personal spaces and accessories, a seating area to have fresh flowers and a few things that add interest, etc.

The easiest ratio to make a floor plan is on a scale of 1/25 (parts by 25) or 1/50 (parts by 50). Everything can then easily be done on a plain sheet of paper, you get more space and you can be sure that your proportions are correct. You can draw the furniture on a separate sheet of paper and then cut it out. This way you can easily slide it on the floor plan until you get the perfect result.

STEP 3: DETERMINE THE COLORS OF YOUR WALLS.

Now that you know where the furniture will be, you can start by coloring in the floor plan color scheme. If you had a nice print on your mood board, you can now determine a place for it. Don’t take a wall that you have to stare at for hours. In the bedroom, the accent wall is often taken behind the bed frame or sleep space. This way it will stand out as soon as you enter the room even under natural light, but it won’t bother you when you have a sleepless night.

You can even put your favorite family photos together inside one large frame or make a gallery wall of these.

A FEW MORE GENERAL TIPS:

1) Choose soft materials for your bed linen.

The bedroom is a place where you can relax and unwind. Make sure that the chosen materials radiate this and also feel that way. Go for soft fabrics such as silk, fleece or wool and combine these with warm materials such as wood. If you have a cold tiled floor in the bedroom, you can break the chill by laying a carpet so you don’t have to step on a cold floor in the morning.

2) Choose soothing colours

Colors have a great effect on our state of mind. In the bedroom it’s best to choose colours that radiate tranquillity. Neutral shades of grey and pastel colours are the most appropriate for this. If you still want a bright color in the room, you can always do this behind the bed.

3) Create atmosphere with lighting

With lighting, you can change the atmosphere of your interior in one second. In addition to the general lighting, provide mood lighting and make sure that you can operate it from the bed. This will prevent you from seldom using the lighting. A dimmer on the general lighting can also be very useful.

4) Less is more

Although decoration is synonymous with a cozy interior, too much decoration can also damage it. Try to choose a few well-chosen eye-catchers that do not load the bedroom. Decoration with geometric shapes are preferred to heavily ornamented objects.

5) Give the bedroom a more spacious effect

Mirrors provide an enormous feeling of space. Try to use room-high mirrors and go for borderless models so that it looks as if the space is going on.

Cool pastel shades such as purple and blue give a more airy feeling and make the bedroom furnishings feel bigger.

If the window seems to float in your room, you can easily cover it up by finishing the walls with floor-to-ceiling curtains and curtains that run from wall to wall. This trick is often used in hotel rooms and provides a more spacious and stylish look.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can I make my bedroom perfect?

Here are some ideas and recommended items for creating your perfect bedroom!

You can put a soft colorful rug at the side of your bed/sleeping area or a center rug right beneath the ceiling light. Put a bedside table or a pair of bedside tables with a lamp for soft lights that can be good for night reading before sleep, as well. Make a color scheme, for your bed color, your bedding linen and pillows and your walls; the internet has many color palettes you can choose from. You might want to make a padded upholstered headboard for your bed frame, or change locations of your sleep space and your seating area. Instead of getting a new rug, why not keep bare floorboards and show off the sheen of great wood. You might also be able to create space for a dressing room separate from your sleeping and seating areas. It's worth investing your time and effort if you finally get the result of a bedroom of your dream! Remember though, that with your bed and other larger pieces of furniture, do ask someone to help you move them around.

Make use of old paint cans. You may have more than a few cans of paint still unused in your storage area. You could change the color scheme of your bedroom and add pizazz! If there's not enough paint for the whole room, you could just paint some pieces of your furniture, like your bed frame and your bedside tables, or one wall to make it your accent wall.

Put old fabrics and fabric swatches to use. You can cut out old fabrics and make them into "new" pillow covers or couch and seat covers. You can combine several swatches to make a collage frame for your accent wall for a change in the color palette of your bedroom.

Freshen up your linen bedding. Give your bed sheets, pillowcases, curtains and other linen bedding a facelift by adding borders with ribbons and mini pompoms. Even these little touches can do great transformation into your best bedding.

Show off your stuff. If you are a collector, a crafts person, or a DIY one, don't just put your works and special or unique items in more storage spaces. Display them, on shelves, tables, counters even bookcases, individually or grouped together.

Accent bare walls. Oversized mirrors can enhance a room's natural light as well as make more space. Take out your photo albums and boxes and make a photo story frame for your wall. That would be a nice touch for more personality for your room.

Bring nature inside your bedroom. Put freshly cut flowers, branches and twigs, even small rocks and cones inside your bedroom. Fresh fruits add visual and textural aesthetics as well.

The bedroom is a place where you need to relax, it is one of the most important rooms in the house.
